How to commission a personalised map illustration
May 15, 2024Personalised maps are one of my favourite types of commission to work on as an illustrator. I just love weaving all of the beautiful details of somebody’s life into a celebratory artwork that they can cherish forever.
As many people often ask me about the process of working with me on a commission I have illustrated this visual guide which takes you through a step by step guide to creating a personalised map.
- Step 1: You reach out to me with your idea. We discuss the options and agree on a size. You then send me your brief, which is a list of all of the ideas that you would like to be included in the artwork. You can learn more about the available sizes and what to include in an artwork here. Once we have agreed the price we are ready to go!
- Step 2: I create a sketch draft of the artwork in pencil. I send a photo of the sketch to you in an email for your feedback. At this stage it’s possible to make small changes and additions. Often when somebody sees their ideas on paper they think of an extra special detail to add. I then create a second sketch draft which I send over email again for your final approval.
- Step 3: The really fun bit! I create the final artwork in ink and watercolour. I send a photo over for your final approval.
- Step 4: I mount the artwork in a 5cm white mount, and frame it in your choice of a white or black frame. The frames I use have a 20cm wooden frame surround, MDF backing board, normal glass and a hook on the back for hanging on the wall. I wrap the artwork carefully in bubble wrap and then package it in a cardboard box for shipping. I ship with DHL and provide a tracking number.
